Hi everyone! My name is Bernardette Pinetta, I am a first time lecturer at CSUN and I am finishing up my doctoral degree at the University of Michigan within the Combined Education and Psychology Program. I am originally from Hawthorne, CA and majored in Political Science with a minor in Education. My area of research investigates the intersection between the ethnic-racial identity (ERI) and critical consciousness (CC) development amongst youth of color. My work highlights the ways parents, educators, and community members not only cultivate youths’ pride in their racial and cultural background but also foster an awareness of their community’s history of political resistance. My scholarship illustrates how a critical ethnic-racial identity can be leveraged to provide youth the tools they need to recognize and dismantle systems that perpetuate and reproduce power differentials. Stop by my office hours to say hi!
