Craig Oconnor
Lecturer
Faculty - Urban Studies & Planning
Brief Biography
Master of Urban Planning, Cal Poly Pomona (1979)
Craig’s first professional assignments were with TELACU—The East Los Angeles Community Union—a Community Development Corporation formed to foster economic development in the 200,000+ person community of unincorporated East Los Angeles. Interestingly, through strong ties with the Jimmy Carter administration, TELACU promoted a USAID-sponsored wind power project among Aymara communities in Bolivia that emanated from Craig’s Master’s project. Subsequently, Craig served as a volunteer on home building projects with Habitat for Humanity in the cities of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, Bolivia and Asunción, Paraguay. Professionally, Craig worked as an urban planner with several architectural firms in the Los Angeles area both as a consultant and employee. This work included serving as a planner on a wide variety of projects from streetscape improvement projects, to specific plans, to master plans for new communities in Southern California, Thailand and Korea. As a Senior Planner at AC Martin, the celebrated LA-based architectural firm, Craig was involved with numerous planning projects including master plans for CSU campuses, including CSUN, and for the three major facilities of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His work has incorporated roles coordinating sustainability initiatives, preparing environmental analyses and integrating multiple planning approaches.
