Dianah Wynter is a full professor in the Cinema & Television Dept at Cal State Northridge, teaching Directing and Film Theory and Aesthetics. As curator of the CSUN Cinematheque, her film series include Are You a Replicant: Sci-fi & The Meaning of Life, LatinAuteur: Cinema from Spain to Latin America, and John Singleton & the Auteurs That Inspired Him, based on the standing exhibit of the late filmmakers’ private vintage film poster collection in the Cinematheque Gallery. The Spring ‘24 Cinematheque film series, “Scribes on the Screen: Auteurs & Adaptations” will feature Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.
While Chair of CTVA at CSUN, she launched the Virtual Production Initiative by forging a strategic partnership with Halon and Lux Machina. Under her leadership CSUN broke into the TheWrap’s Top 20 Film schools for the first time in 2021.
Wynter began her career as a stage and TV director. Her credits include Showtime’s series Soul Food, The Parkers, various series for Nickelodeon and Disney. She received a Best Director Emmy nomination for the ABC-TV movie Daddy’s Girl and directed the feature film Intimate Betrayal for BET-Starz. On stage, she directed the World Premiere of The Interrogation of Nathan Hale at South Coast Rep, and To Take Arms starring Sanaa Lathan.
Her most recent book is The Post-Soul Cinema of Kasi Lemmons (2023) published by Palgrave Macmillan.
