Brief Biography
Gagik Melikyan is a scientist, educator, writer, speaker, panelist, reviewer, expert, and public advocate. He is a Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University Northridge who holds two academic degrees, Ph.D. and D.Sc. (Doctor of Sciences). His research interests include radical and ionic reactions of transition metal-complexed unsaturated systems, cancer drug development, unnatural female hormone mimics, aromatase inhibitors, enzymatic chemistry, food chemistry, materials science, and environmental chemistry. Being a highly cited author, his research has culminated in 90 research papers, reviews, and book chapters, as well as 244 presentations at national/international conferences, academic institutions, and public forums. Dr. Melikyan is a recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Faculty Award and Jerome Richfield Scholar Award, the highest distinctions given by the university in recognition of excellence in faculty research. A devoted educator, Dr. Melikyan received the Polished Apple Award, and lately the Kennedy Center Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award, a national honor. He was elected as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Armenia. As an expert, for many years Dr. Melikyan was involved in protecting the American public from harmful chemicals and environmental pollutants.
