Brief Biography
I completed my undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and my M.Sc. in Biochemistry, from the University of Bombay. My Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1986-1990) is from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. My post-doctoral training was at the University of California in San Diego (1991-1993). I continued research at the University of Iowa as a staff Biochemist and Adjunct Research Professor before joining CSUN in 2001 as a tenure-track faculty member.
My research at CSUN has focused on understanding cellular events that lead to metabolic disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis. We demonstrated a direct relationship between the level of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) expression and insulin resistance in rat muscle cells. Cells with a knock-down of the LPL gene were more responsive to insulin and show greater glucose uptake, glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis compared to wild-type cells.
In another project, we showed that mice with macrophage-specific overexpression of the LPL gene (huLPL+/+) developed larger atherogenic lesions compared to huLPL-/- mice. Silencing the LPL gene in THP-1 macrophages improved cholesterol efflux due to increased expression of the cholesterol transporter ABCA1, providing a mechanism for the atherogenic role of macrophage LPL.
