Dr. Monica Gallegos completed her PhD at the University of Arizona with a focus in Health Communication and a minor in Public Health. Dr. Gallegos studies how interpersonal relationships impact health in underrepresented, underserved, understudied, and at-risk populations, including Latina/o/xs, pregnant women seeking treatment for opioid addiction, as well as incarcerated women, their children, and the guardians of their children. Dr. Gallegos teaches a variety of courses at the undergraduate level, including Interpersonal Communication, Advanced Interpersonal Communication, Health Communication, Communication Theory, Intercultural Communication, Public Speaking, Advanced Public Speaking, Health Campaigns, and Lifespan Communication. At the graduate level, Dr. Gallegos teaches Health Communication and Interpersonal Communication.

Dr. Gallegos also works with partners across campus, including the Office of Student Success and Academic Technology, to help faculty identify equity gaps in their courses and develop strategies to eliminate them. This collaboration led to a successful 2024-2025 CSUN DEI Grant, focused on training faculty how to use Canvas tools to address course equity gaps in "real time".
