Fluid dynamics research is crucial to developing new technologies for advanced helicopters, turbine engines, improved airdrop (parachute) systems, drag reduction, unmanned air vehicles, etc. Therefore, there has been an increasing focus on developing both fundamental and applied aspects of fluid dynamics research. California State University Northridge (CSUN) has state-of-the-art flow research facilities such as wind and water tunnels, and the faculty have extensive research experience in the field of experimental fluid dynamics. Our work in this field is directly aligned with the research interests of the Department of Defense (DoD). However, we lack essential research instrumentation, which has hampered our e?orts to continue our high quality research activities at CSUN. We therefore propose to acquire a stereoscopic PIV system, in order to enhance our experimental capabilities and allow PI and key personnel to pursue research in the areas of base drag reduction, active flow control, and Fluid Structure Interactions (FSI). The research opportunities resulting from acquisition of the requested equipment will help us contribute to the University's vision of significantly increasing research activities in the coming years, and providing a diversified educational experience to a new generation of skilled engineers and researchers. A stereoscopic PIV system has the ability to provide accurate, all three components of velocity flow field data for a studied flow, and will significantly add to our existing instrumentation capabilities. This equipment will be housed in the Experimental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CSUN, which is an experimental test facility equipped with a wind tunnel, a water tunnel, Laser Doppler Velocimetry system, data acquisition modules and essential optical tools required for performing complex fluid dynamics experiments. The PI will be primarily responsible for installation, day to day operation, and maintenance of the requested equipment. The PI will have assistance from University staff(mechanical and electrical shops, IT), and access to funds from the College of Engineering and Computer Science, for covering maintenance costs after the initial warranty period of the equipment
