Professor Maria D?Orsogna will serve as an Associate Director at The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM). D?Orsogna is a Professor at California State University Northridge. Â The Associate Director is expected to work as a team with the Director, the second Associate Director, the Director of Special Projects, and Assistant Director to promote the mission of IPAM and engage in activities designed to broaden the impact of IPAM and its programs on the mathematical, scientific, and engineering communities. (S)he actively searches out and develops innovative program ideas and explores future direction for IPAM. The Associate Director builds contacts with organizers especially in areas related to her/his field of expertise, and utilizes her/his unique connections to the community. The Associate Director seeks out funding opportunities that synergize with IPAM?s mission. The Associate Director serves as member of IPAM?s two boards, the Board of Trustees and Science Advisory Board. In a typical year at IPAM, there are two long 14-week programs, and four 1-week workshop. Each Associate Director resumes responsibility for one of the long programs, and two of the 1-week workshop, and works with the staff at IPAM to ensure smooth operations of programs and workshops. It is the job of the Associate Director to work with organizers to see that good program and workshop ideas are well-executed, and to monitor and maintain the scientific quality of the programs and workshops. In particular, the Associate Director ensures that the invited long-term core participant and workshop speakers are the right people for each program and workshop. Participants are expected to be leaders in their respective field, and to represent the proper mix and interaction of different scientific communities in the spirit of the IPAM mission, and ideas. It is the responsibility of the Associate Director to actively seek out ways to maximize involvement of women and minorities in IPAM?s programs and workshops. (S)he is expected to attend and actively participate in programs and workshops whenever possible. Each long program culminates with a final workshop at the Lake Arrowhead conference center, and has 2 additional reunion conferences at Lake Arrowhead. It is also the responsibility of the Associate Director to organize these meetings at Lake Arrowhead, and look for possible synergetic activities between the different programs. The Associate Director also actively engages in the planning, running and project development for IPAM?s undergraduate summer program (RIPS) and other special programs and activities. (S)he will represent IPAM and its mission and promote its programs at conferences and special events as requested by the Director.
