When researchers discuss metallic glasses with workers outside of the field, two questions repeatedly arise; what is it, and how is it used. Metallic glass, like other glass, is a frozen liquid, and a principle physical aspect describing liquids is viscosity versus temperature. To date, no mutually agreed upon model of viscosity for metallic glass forming liquids exists. How metallic glass is used depends upon how its properties influence, and are influenced by processing (Figure 1). This proposal attempts to address both of these questions: to gather data needed to develop an accurate model of glass properties, and to apply that data to processing techniques that lead to viable products.
