In 2011, the State Legislature passed a law requiring the State Board of Education (SBE) to adopt new science content standards, updating them to account for changes in science and pedagogy in the decade since the previous standards were adopted. On September 4, 2013, the SBE adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve. SB 300 (Chapter 480, Statutes of 2013) also calls for the revision of the Science Framework to align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This important document will provide guidance for implementing the NGSS standards. It will be used to evaluate instruction materials (including state-adopted textbooks) and as the basis for designing assessments. It will therefore play a significant role in shaping the way science is taught in California schools in the next decade. Faculty at California State Northridge will write the high school chapters of the Framework, which will be published in 2016. This award is the first of three awards for writing the Framework.
