Since 2013, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) collaborated with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Project Grad Los Angeles (PGLA) to ease the transition from high school to college for the district?s students. LAUSD students are overwhelmingly Latino/a or Black and low-income, and most who go on to postsecondary education are the first in their family to do so. Studies show that mathematics placement and preparation is strongly correlated with first year college success. Our Transitions to College Math and Statistics (TCMS) class seeks to close opportunity gaps by addressing student's needs in math skills and practices as well as the social/emotional learning issues that impede or enhance that acquisition of those skills and practices. In 2017, we expanded from 6 to 40 schools serving 1800 students, and in 2018, we further expanded to 2800 students. We will use institutional data to examine the impact of TCMS. In 2019, we will add another 20 LAUSD schools to the project and add several high schools from Compton Unified School District.
