San Fernando Valley Science Project Lesson Study

With the previous support of the California Science Project, San Fernando Valley Science Project at CSUN has developed a Facilitator in Training (FIT) program for training science leaders to lead lesson study teams across the state. In this project, the research team will use the funds to support the science teachers who will be participating in the lesson study cycles and guided by the facilitators trained in the FIT program. Science teachers will work collaboratively with the facilitators to incorporate Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into their science lessons and teach them to their students. Lesson data such as class video recordings and student responses to assessments, pre-post surveys, and interviews from the teachers will be collected and analyzed to examine the evidence for teacher growth and benefits gained from the lesson study cycles. The resulting lessons from the lesson study teams will increase students? engagement and meaningful learning in science classrooms and provide exemplar lessons for the larger science community. The opportunity for the science leaders to facilitate the lesson study will strengthen their facilitation and leadership skills and create a sustainable state pipeline for lesson study facilitation.
