Our project, ValleyGO!, is an adaptive sports program for veterans and other individuals with disabilities, primarily SCI. Adaptive sports can directly impact quality of life for individuals with SCI, helping to build strength and aerobic capacity, providing opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition, and offering opportunities for Paralympic participation. ValleyGO! was established to address the demand for more and consistent adaptive sports offerings for veterans and other individuals with disabilities in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valley areas of Los Angeles. It consists of adaptive sports training/program outreach sessions and monthly adaptive sports events in area parks, with an initial focus on the sport of hand cycling. We are now seeking funding to enhance these programs and add an adaptive aquatic sports component (canoeing, paddle boarding, and kayaking) based at CSUN?s Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake. ValleyGO! brings together CSUN students and adaptive sports experts, SCI specialists, and community volunteers to serve the needs of veterans and other individuals with disabilities in the region; developing it into a multisport experience will broaden its impact and reach.
