Data Science Program with Career Support and Connections to Industry

The California State University Northridge (CSUN) proposes to initiate a new curriculum in Data Science (DS) that is designed to offer new coursework, research opportunities linked to emerging efforts in industry, and career exploration workshops for undergraduates in mathematics and related programs of studies. The project falls under the NSF AD Harnessing the Data Revolution. CSUN, a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority Institution (MI), is among the largest single-campus universities in the United States. With enrollments of 39,816 students, drawn largely from the broader Los Angeles County region, most (78%) receive some form of financial aid. For these students, college is perceived as a pathway to economic security. The program will mainly target undergraduates enrolled in the College of Science and Mathematics, especially applied mathematics and statistics options, who feel that they have few pathways after graduation other than K-12 educational work or entry into graduate program in mathematics, but will be open to all majors who meet the prerequisites.
